Ahh, follow the great minds…Frank Lloyd Wright designed a building that was rejected by the, then, board of directors of Arizona State University- it’s said, becuase he was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church. Someone had the sense to tell the board they were morons and that this living icon was old and the building might be the last he would ever design ( it was). So Wright revised his plan a bit, the building went up and it wasn’t until an aerial photograph was taken that the gigantic toilet design was recognized. Thus stands Grady Gammage Auditorium.
Good one, Frank…

So, how about a toilet vessel? In honor of Frank Llyod Wright?

How To Start A Sculpture Collection

Many people have hobbies that include collecting things. If you love sculpture but have until now considered it was something that belonged in a museum, you should think again. It is possible for anyone to start a sculpture collection because there are so many places which offer sculptures for sale.

The first thing that you need to decide upon is the kind of sculpture you want to collect. This will usually be defined by your interest in a particular subject area, the space you have available to keep your sculpture collection, and the budget you have available. Your budget will usually be a good indicator of the kind of materials your sculpture collection will be in.

Themes or motifs

If you have a particular interest in a theme, perhaps birds or classical figures, you may decide that your collection won’t be restricted to materials but only to your chosen theme. On the other hand you may prefer to have a collection of sculptures that is linked only by the material used. Some materials cost more than others and therefore those sculptures for sale will cost you more to buy.

There are many places you can find sculptures for sale. You can buy them new sculptures at places such as garden centres and sculpture parks. You can also find them in some specialist stores. Higher end and more exclusive sculptures can be found in galleries or specialist sculptor exhibitions. If your budget is limited, a great way of finding sculptures with which to start your collection is to attend public auctions as these often have some kind of sculptures going under the hammer. You will find less expensive sculptures in general sale auctions than you will in art auctions, but these will generally be of a lower quality.

Research and more

As with all collections, before getting started you should do a little research. This will help you to determine what kind of sculpture you want to collect, as well as give you an idea of current price ranges for purchasing both new and second hand sculptures. You should find out who the real collectible sculptors are in your chose collection field, and how to identify their work. This will help you find bargain sculptures for sale at places such as car boot sales and smaller house clearance auctions.

You should also find out how to take care of sculptures in the kind of materials you hope to collect. This won’t just help you keep your own collection in pristine condition; it will also teach you what will happen to sculptures when they aren’t taken care of. The added benefit of this information is that when you are buying a sculpture, you will know what damage to look for.

With so many places with sculptures for sale, collecting sculptures can be a very satisfying hobby. It’s diverse, interesting and is something that can be done on most budget levels.
