what is a good brand of watercolors?
hi! ive been using watercolors for a while now and i want to get a better brand. ive been using a cheep generic brand, but want to get better pigments….without killing my pocket. i just don’t want to buy a bunch of different brands, because that’s a waste of money, so in your experience, whats a good brand?
First, buy artists quality if you are looking for good pigment strength. Daniel Smith makes some of the best watercolors for a reasonable price. http://www.danielsmith.com/
Winsor and Newton also makes very good watercolors. . . but their Cotman line, while ok, is still student grade. Look for W&N Artists watercolors. http://www.winsornewton.com/products/water-colours/artists-water-colour/ Smaller tubes than Daniel Smith, making them a little more expensive.
And I have to disagree about buying tubes of different brands. . . . as an artist and watercolorist, I endorse finding the colors in the brands that work best for you. For example, I have done many paintings with just three tubes of paint: DSmith New Gamboge (yellow) and Winsor and Newton Permanent Rose and Antwerp Blue. I learned at a workshop you can mix the entire range of secondary and tertiary colors without ever making mud with these three pigments. I dispense my paints into a travel-style palette and let them dry. Then as I am setting up for painting I spritz them with water so that they will soften and be ready for use. Every palette I use has space for the three pigments that I listed above, including one space for the three pre-mixed together for the perfect shadow color . . . which yields a hue much like caput mortem or mars violet!
