Canvas Artwork Questions

Canvas Artwork
How best to frame an oil painting of a hilly scenery on canvas?

The tree is the centre piece of the artwork and from where one can see the hill and houses midst other trees in the background. The sun is also shining down on the scene painted. Does it need a glass put in front if frames are used and what frames are best? I think glass might spoil the oil -canvas look —so pls. any suggestions?

oil paintings are not framed with glass or mat because it will cause damage to that painting over time. that being said you can mostly use any frame you feel compliments the piece. from your description it sounds like a classic landscape painting, usually classical frames (ornate or frames from the artworks time era) go well with that subject. at most frame shops you can buy some frames without glass and can get “frame clips” to clip in your piece, this is pretty much the cheapest and easiest solution. However if you see a frame you like that has glass as long as the frame is reasonably thick enough you can simply remove the glass and backing from it.

just measure out your canvas, or better yet bring it with you to a frame shop, and see if there are any ready made frame’s that suite your work. if your canvas is an odd size you might have to consider custom framing.

i dont know the dimensions of it but typically the bigger the painting the thicker the frame should be, so keep that in mind. if you post an image i might be able to suggest more specifically.

hope this helps :) good luck

Buying Canvas Artwork: Choosing the Right Type of Canvas

Did you know that there is no such thing as a generic canvas for art? The vast majority of people who cannot describe themselves as artists or art experts will not know this because canvas art is just that – canvas art. It is not cotton canvas art or polyester canvas art but simply canvas art. As such, it is easy to see why those looking to purchase canvas artwork are a little confused as to why there is a difference between canvases. Many people that purchase art may not know that they have to check the material at all, which is why this article is absolutely essential for those of you that are looking to buy art in the very near future and still need a little help in terms of what to look for.

When it comes to purchasing art, you should be aware of exactly what you are buying in great detail. Even if you are only purchasing a painting or print because you like it rather than for any form of investment, you should still know exactly what you are buying. After all, you will only have to like the art canvas for a few years if you have chosen a poor quality canvas because it will degrade after that point. There are different degrees of quality and all of the best canvas paintings will be completed on the highest possible quality canvases unless the artist is trying to achieve a specific effect.

For example, it is common knowledge in the art world that the best possible canvas to paint on is 100% cotton. It is durable and incredibly easy to work with, which is why artists favor it. It also stands the test of time because it is completely natural. This has been proven by the Masters, most of whom used cotton because they had no cheaper synthetic option, as artists do today. You will also find that there are calico and hessian canvass around. Both of these are different in that they restrict brush strokes in different ways and encourage it to flow differently. Calico is tightly woven but hessian is loosely woven and that determines the differences between the finished effects of the art. Choosing either is not a bad decision because it reflects the artist’s choice. However, there are materials to stay clear of.

Hessian, calico and cotton are all natural materials and make for fantastic canvas art but there are also synthetic materials available too. Those synthetic materials may be mixed with natural materials, such as polyester and cotton blends, or they may make up the complete canvas on their own, such as 100% polyester canvases. Either way, they are nowhere near as good as the natural canvases. They affect the final product with the natural canvases producing a far more polished result than the synthetic canvases. In addition, the synthetic canvases tend to reduce the value of the finished article to a greater degree. If you simply want a wall filler, the synthetic canvases are OK as a result of all of this. However, if you are making an investment then you should choose a natural canvas instead.

You should also be aware of the fact that this new found knowledge will be useful in rooting out those art sellers that are simply out for your money and those that know exactly what they are talking about and indeed selling. If you choose a painting or piece of canvas art that you like and read the description then you may find out what sort of canvas it is painted on immediately. If not then do not be afraid to inquire about what form of canvas you would be invested in.

Your seller will then take one of two attitudes – they will either tell you or they will avoid the question or answer that they do now know. The former can be trusted because he or she will know exactly what he or she is talking about in addition to being happy to help. However, the latter should be ignored. If they do not know what canvas your painting is on or will not tell you then they do not know their stock very well and should be avoided. It is little things like this that will help you to build your knowledge of art and will also help you to select the right investment no matter what. Never be afraid to ask these questions of canvas art because it is only then that you will be able to get the best possible art for you.  At Canvas Paintings Gallery we use a cotton and polyester blend of canvas for most paintings and a 100% cotton solution for the others.  If you are interested in knowing more about our selection of canvas artwork, do not hesitate to contact us!
